Victoria Gaol,
13th.November, 1900.
I have the honour to inform you that there
are at present 4 vacancies for Warders in this Gaol, and that
on the completion of the new ward at present under construc-
tion 2 more warders will be required. These two additional
officers have been provided for in the Estimates for 1901.
No suitable candidates are offering in
the Colony for these vacancies and I therefore beg to request
that application be made to the Secretary of State for the
Colonies to have 6 candidates selected from the Prison Ser-
vice at home, as the new ward will be completed before the
end of the year.
A
I attach paper of particulars regarding
by these appointments, and I have to suggest that if the time
steps are taken in England to call for candidates the new
rates of pay recommended by the Committee which reported on
the salaries of Subordinate officers shall have been approved,
those rates be substituted for the rates now entered in the
paper of particulars. The enhanced rates shouldattract a good
class of men.

The Colonial Secretary,
